Networking Up one level

Leading Education Institution Deploys Attack Mitigators to protect network from malicious attacks
Source: Cohesive Communications - Posted April 11th, 2005 10:57 AM EDT

Top Layer Networks (www.TopLayer.com), the global leader for intrusion prevention, has today announced that the University of Westminster has deployed the Top Layer Attack Mitigator IPS 5500-500 to address the security concerns from various rate and content based attacks as the institution becomes increasingly dependent on the web.

The University of Westminster is one of the most popular in the UK with over 20,000 students and hundreds of staff and visiting academics. Increasingly more of the information resources to staff and students were conducted online and as a result, protection from the network being compromised from HTTP worms, zero day exploits, denial of service attacks, and other cyber threats was paramount.

" The size of the network and the high bandwidth availability made the network susceptible to attacks from both inside and out which was a huge concern as we grew our Internet presence," said Judie Ayoola, Network Security Officer, University of Westminster. " Malicious activities within and originating from our network, such as work propagation could seriously affect the performance of the network which in our current 24/7 environment is considered unacceptable. "

To address these concerns, the University deployed the Top Layer IPS 5500-500 platform, which comfortably performs deep packet inspection on all the University's network traffic at high speeds with 100% accuracy. " Top Layer's IPS 5500-500 is capable of doing deep packet inspection on all traffic at 60K connections/sec with flow table capacity of 2 Million sessions with excellent detection rates reducing false positive events, " continued Ayoola.

" The University of Westminster is one of the first organisations to fully embrace the concept of pure IPS, providing it the ability to detect and block illegal rate and content based traffic ensuring network integrity whilst maintaining availability and performance," said Micheal Reynolds, Top Layer.

" Deploying Top Layer's Attack Mitigator has meant infections are easily identified, contained and remediated immediately allowing the systems to return back to normal in a very short time," concluded Ayoola.
