Source: Motorola - Posted May 17th, 2005 5:47 PM EDT

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) is launching a new version of its Canopy wireless broadband equipment portfolio, authorized for sale by Anatel, the National Telecommunications Agency, in the 5.4 GigaHertz (GHz) band. Carriers, service providers and private network operators now can benefit from Motorola’s Canopy solution, which is an always-on, cost-effective connectivity solution that can be configured to transport data, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and Internet protocol (IP) video.

In point-to-multipoint network, Canopy’s Advantage™ 5.4GHz solution offers aggregate data transmission rates up to 14 megabits per second (Mbps) with a range of 1.6 kilometers and 7 Mbps with coverage of up to 3.2 kilometers.

The Canopy portfolio also has available products for Brazil’s 5.8 GHz band that have been designed from a feature and price perspective for private network operators and Internet service providers to businesses and residences. For example, UNIMED Marília, part of the largest Brazilian private medical assistance network, has deployed with ABASE Motorola’s Canopy platform in the 5.8GHz band to create an IP network between its doctors offices with service providers, drugstores and hospitals in Marília, Garça, Pompeia, Echaporã and Vera Cruz, all in the state of Sao Paulo.

With the 5.4GHz and 5.8GHz Canopy products, service providers will be able to offer high data speeds, and increased performance and quality of service to their customers, including high-quality voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). Telecom operators can deploy the Canopy Platform to extend existing Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service or use it to offer wireless DSL. Wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) also are providing high-speed Internet service to businesses and residences using Motorola’s Canopy product portfolio in unserved and underserved markets.
